A gate between the Upside Down and the real-earth was opened in 1983 deep under Hawkins National Laboratory, by a young girl with telekinetic powers named Eleven.

A large humanoid predator – dubbed the Demogorgon by Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson and Lucas Sinclair – escaped from the portal into Hawkins, and kidnapped Will Byers.

While in the Upside Downwardly, Will was able to manipulate electricity in the real-world and communicated with his mother Joyce past flickering lights.

In the season one finale he was rescued past Joyce and Police Primary Jim Hopper, only continued to have visions of the alternate reality after cough upwardly a slug-similar creature.

In flavour ii (warning – spoilers ahead), it is revealed that the slug was in fact a babe Demogorgon, and that Will has been possessed by a shadowy monster that the boys phone call the Heed Flayer.

He begins to have visions of a series of tunnels underneath Hawkins, leading the lab to realise that the Upside Downwardly is spreading.

Could the Upside Downwardly be real?

Professor Brad Thousand Gibson, head of physics at the University of Hull, has said that parallel universes like the Upside Down "absolutely" could be out in that location.

He explained that in that location are many models which suggest this, but "unfortunately there is no manner equally of yet to testify they might exist".

"It is not difficult to suggest that they be in the sense of a mathematical model, merely alas, at that place is admittedly no observational prove that they really do," he said.

"There are as many multiverse or parallel universe models as there are people on Earth today – and they run the gamut of near identical to what is around the states, to wildly different, with everything in between."

Professor Gibson detailed 1 type of model, which he compared to "Swiss cheese – with each hole being a separate universe".

"Occasionally these universes would come up into contact depending upon how the 'cheese' evolves with time," he said.

"When they would come into contact they would lead to 'hot spots' in what is called the Cosmic Microwave Groundwork (CMB) – background radiations in the microwave frequency."

Under this theory, there would be "something unexplainable" in the microwave frequency. As of yet, this has non been plant.

"The absence of such a signature is not proof that parallel universes exercise not exist, but that is actually all we can say correct at present," Professor Gibson added.

In Stranger Things, Eleven opens a portal to the Upside Down using her telekinetic powers. Elsewhere in Hawkins, temporary doors open at random throughout Hawkins.

But every bit Professor Gibson explained, nether the current scientific thinking "there are no viable ways to get through universes".

"While information technology is a tried and trusted prop in sci-fi, at that place are no viable ways, either through black holes of worm holes," he said.

"At that place are some parallel universe models where yous can envision the universes as being parallel slices of staff of life, and if you had enough energy to squeeze the universes together y'all could get them to touch.

"But it really takes nigh infinite energy to get them to touch, and so while possible mathematically, realistically they cannot.

"Admitted this is a flake disappointing on one level, but not plenty to impact on our dearest for Stranger Things."

Stranger Things: Xi defeated a Demogorgon in season one, but it turned out to be ane of many

The show's creators Ross and Matt Duffer have confirmed that a 3rd season is in the works, with a fourth planned to conclude the story.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ross revealed that the brothers have an "Upside Down document" which "describes its rules and its mythology in quite a bit of particular".

Whether or not this detail matches up with real-life scientific models remains to be seen, however it seems more probable that the Duffers volition borrow from sci-fi lore.

Either way, fans aren't probable to ever find out the inner workings of the Upside Downward.

"Information technology'southward a balancing act," Ross said.

"If you tell too much, it loses a little chip of that mystery. We plain will shed more light on it moving forward, but we want to practise it a little fleck at a time.

"Fifty-fifty at the finish, I don't remember nosotros're going to answer all of those questions, and I don't think we even necessarily demand to."

Stranger Things season 2 is bachelor on Netflix now.
